HCA Candidates Debate Recap

September 1st, 2021

Debate Recap:

To those who were able to view the HCA Candidates Debate live, we thank you for your participation.

Due to some technical difficulties at the start of the debate, the YouTube stream did not begin until about 15 minutes into the debate presentation.  Following the presentation, we  captured those missing minutes by using the Zoom version of the meeting.  There are now two videos available on YouTube, covering the complete debate. If you would like to replay the debate, here are the links to those videos.

  1. The first 15 minutes from the Zoom recording can be viewed at https://youtu.be/y2ZC6VOYfwo
  2. The remaining portion of the debate, as presented on YouTube can be viewed at https://youtu.be/_5MsMehFfIM

Huntley Community Association

HCA Candidates Debate

The Huntley Community Association (HCA) will host a  virtual debate for the candidates running in our riding of Kanata-Carleton in this year’s federal election.

This event will give the residents of Carp and West Carleton an opportunity to hear the candidate’s views on the matters of concern to our community.

To attend: Send email request to debate@hca-carp.ca

A Zoom invitation will be supplied to everyone who requests to attend.

You can also view the debate on a YouTube stream at https://youtu.be/pTNz3kOCPuI

Date: Wednesday September 8, 2021, 7:00 – 8:30 PM.

Format: Each candidate will have 2:00 minutes for an opening statement.  Then, each candidate will answer 5 questions that will be selected in advance. In random order, each candidate will be addressed one question first, and then the rest will have up to two minutes to answer.  Each candidate will have 30 seconds for a short rebuttal after everyone has answered.

Only the participants and the moderator will be visible and audible.  Everyone else will be muted.  Chat will not be monitored during the event but chat messages can still be left and will be viewable to the candidates and hosts only.

The event will be live streamed on Zoom and YouTube and recorded for later playback.

Source of the Questions: The HCA is publicizing the event on social media, by direct email to our mailing list and by an article in the West Carleton Online.  Questions from residents will be sought in advance of the event.  Please submit your question by email in either official language to debate@hca-carp.ca by September 7 2021.

Written questions in French will be added into our list. The debate will be in English but the candidates will receive a list of all comments and they can respond as they wish.

Les questions écrites en français seront ajoutées à notre liste. Le débat se déroulera en anglais mais les candidats recevront une liste de tous les commentaires et ils pourront y répondre comme ils le souhaitent.

In past debates this has produced a very strong response.  A small committee working under the direction of the debate moderator (including Citizen columnist Randall Denly) will collate the questions and combine the ones on similar themes to determine and paraphrase the 5 most asked questions.  These will not be shared with the candidates in advance.

Event moderation:  The event will be moderated by Allan Joyner, board member of the HCA. He is an experienced political debate moderator.

Suggestion to residents:

“It would help if voters would look harder at what the candidates offer and just a bit less at the leaders. When this election is over, the people of Ottawa are not going to be represented by Justin Trudeau, Erin O’Toole or Jagmeet Singh. The MPs we choose have that job, and if they aren’t good at it, we will all suffer.”  (quote from Randall Denley in a recent Ottawa Citizen article).
